As an entrepreneur, it’s really important to be passionate, driven and enthusiastic but we all know that running your own business can be very challenging and very stressful so it’s important to take some steps to make sure that we don’t burn out in the process.
So – I have got some steps for you that have helped me to stay on top of burning out and they’re tips that can make a positive impact on how you feel in your day-to-day working lives but also such a difference on your general wellbeing.
Number 1 – make sure that you’re delegating or outsourcing for jobs or projects
I’ve talked about this before but as entrepreneurs it’s hard not to feel like we have to do everything because we often feel like we can do a better job ourselves or we might not trust people to have the best interests of our company at heart.
But – trying to take on too much can easily overwhelm you so instead, try to surround yourself with great people who you can trust to do amazing things to lighten the load and the pressure. `
Right, onto number 2 which is to make sure that you are managing your time effectively.
Time management is crucial and you should be setting goals that are realistic and manageable because otherwise you’re just going to be destined for failure.
It sounds so simple but make sure that you’re actually prioritising the most important things and the time-sensitive projects that need completing and then work out what you can put on the back bench.
And – remember that you can say no or if you’re bad at saying no then learn to! Not every single opportunity that comes our way has to be taken and saying no to low priority things can create space for the bigger and longer term projects that actually matter.
My last tip for time management is to make sure that you’re giving yourself breaks. I know – it can be very tempting to just work right through your lunch or eat it at your desk without a second thought but actually giving yourself short, regular breaks can improve your focus and your energy.
Number 3 – set realistic expectations.
Regardless of where you are in your business journey, everyone wants success but you have to remember that it’s a marathon and not a sprint. It takes time.
It’s great to take inspiration from figures or companies that we admire but try not to get too caught up on what they’re doing – focus on your own journey and celebrate the small wins wherever you can.
And try to be kind to yourself! Know your limits and don’t push yourself too hard. This is a hard gig and as hard as it is to overcome challenges and mistakes, these are the things that in the long run can actually have a really positive impact because you can learn and grow from them.
Next on the list is developing or maintaining a great support system.
When times are tough we can turn to our family and friends for support but why not take advantage of support from the people who are in the unique situation of going through the exact same thing that you are?
Networking is a great way to build these relationships so try and pluck up the courage and put yourself out there to meet some new people. In my experience, people are really willing to share what they’ve been through and their insights, so take advantage of that because you could have a whole tribe of people out there waiting for you!
Finally, number 5 – make sure to set some boundaries and prioritise your self-care.
It’s tempting to work every hour under the sun and sometimes it’s necessary to go the extra mile but having defined working hours can really help to give that work/life balance. So make sure to leave those after-hours emails and work calls for the next day if you can!
And, do something just for you that’s not business-related! I know it’s hard to completely switch off and to do something that’s just completely for our own enjoyment but I can promise you that it will do you the world of good!
For me, I like to make sure that I’m getting exercise and that’s usually running in the mornings, it really clears my head and I feel so much better for doing it.
Having a routine and a hobby or something that you can do just for your own self-care can really help to reduce stress, improve our moods and boost our energy.
